Changes to ratios, new educators and transporting children

31 August 2020

There have been changes to the Education and Care Services National Regulations.

Two changes, commencing on 1 September 2020, apply to South Australian services and relate to staffing provisions. There is also a change relating to transport, which applies nationally and commences on 1 October 2020.

Educator-to-child ratios

The educator-to-child ratio is changing from 1:10 to 1:11 at centre-based services in South Australia. This is for children 36 months of age and older but under school age. This ratio is the minimum requirement but providers may choose to engage more educators.

Please note: There will be no change for South Australian government provided preschools. Providers across the sector can maintain existing requirements through service policy and operational decisions.

New educators

Providers in South Australia can now employ new educators for a three-month probationary period without an approved qualification for the purposes of educator-to-child ratios. After this time the educator must be actively working towards an approved qualification.

This applies to centre-based services with children preschool age or under, but not including OSHC.

Transportation of children

Nationally, education and care services that provide or arrange transport as part of the service must have policies and procedures about the safe transportation of children.
