COVID-19: Keep up the good work!

6 July 2020

South Australia has done very well at stopping the spread of COVID-19 so far. Thanks to all staff, schools and early childhood services who have played their part in this success.

As things are going so well, the Premier of South Australia recently announced step three of the COVID-19 roadmap.

What does this mean for schools and early childhood services?

Continue physical distancing

All adults must still follow the density and physical distancing guidelines outlined by SA Health:

  • Now no more than one person per two square metres in an enclosed space.
  • Maintain a minimum social distance of 1.5 metres.

Students and children do not have to maintain physical distancing requirements in classrooms, play spaces or corridors.

There is now no cap on the number of people in a room. However, physical distancing and room-density requirements must be followed by adults e.g. staff meetings.

More activities allowed

A lot more activities are allowed again as of 29 June, as long as government health advice and physical distancing requirements are strictly followed:

  • parents, volunteers and other service providers at school and early childhood service grounds (in line with school/service policies)
  • assemblies
  • class photos
  • intrastate camps and excursions
  • sport competitions, sports days and carnivals, including inter-school competitions (use of change rooms and shower facilities is not permitted)
  • inter-school choirs, bands and other performing art activities
  • school formals, socials and discos
  • playgroups and occasional care
  • larger face-to-face professional learning activities.

Requirements still in place

  • Children and staff must stay home if they are unwell and seek medical advice.
  • Physical contact (even between children) must be limited. Encourage non-physical greetings.
  • Playgrounds are for children from the school or service only, not the general public.
  • Parents must continue to physical distance, including during at pick-ups and drop offs.
  • Interstate and overseas travel remains on hold.
