COVID 19 update from Department for Education

17 November 2020

We received this information from the Department for Education on 17 November 2020:

School closure:  Roma Mitchell Secondary College

SA Health have advised a student who attends Roma Mitchell Secondary College has tested positive to COVID-19 while potentially infectious.

The site will be closed for a minimum of 48 hours to allow for a thorough clean and contact tracing.

Staff and families have been notified.

Updated health advice: Mawson Lakes School

A large number of staff and students who attended the Mawson Lakes School, preschool or co-located community early learning between 11 and 13 November are now required self-isolate for 14 days starting from Friday 13 November.

As a result the school and preschool will not reopen until at least Monday 30 November.

If you have received a letter from SA Health it means you are required to self-isolate and a public health officer will contact you today to explain what that means. Please follow all the instructions they provide.

More information on self-isolation is available on the SA Health website.

People living in the same house as someone who attended Mawson Lakes School or preschool don’t need to self-isolate (i.e. can go to work and school) unless requested by SA Health or SA Police.

Updated health advice: Thomas More College

A group of staff and students from Catholic school, Thomas More College have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days. These students and staff include:

  • anyone who attended the Middle School (7-9) Awards ceremony on Thursday morning (12/11), or who was present in a year 8 classroom on Thursday (12/11) or Friday (13/11).

Different to Mawson Lakes School and preschool, SA Health has advised that that all household members (parents, siblings, partners etc) of the students and staff who attended the above awards ceremony and year 8 classroom are also required to self-isolate for 14 days. This may impact some students in neighbouring primary schools.

Please note that this does not mean all siblings of Thomas More College students, just those of the students and staff classified as close contacts and have been asked to self-isolate by SA Health.

Physical distancing

Please continue to maintain a minimum physical distance of 1.5 m between adults at all times, including meeting rooms and staff rooms.

Online meetings or teleconferences are encouraged for larger groups of people.

Concerts and events

Functions held on school grounds, such as graduations and end of year concerts, are excluded from the new direction requirements.

However, advice from SA Health is to limit the number of people where possible until we have a clearer picture of the COVID-19 situation in South Australia.

The department suggests leaders use best judgement based on the number of people that were likely to attend planned events. For example, limit attendance to staff, students and immediate family (parents/guardian and siblings), and place caps on the number of people attending to ensure all adults can physically distance.

All schools and preschools must continue to capture names and contact details of every person who attends a school event for contact tracing purposes.

Please note that ceremonies held off-site at private venues are now capped at 100. Please speak to your venue if this is likely to impact your school event.

School sport and swimming lessons

  • SAPSASA and SAASTA events planned for this week have been cancelled.
  • All interschool sports and carnivals must be postponed or cancelled until at least 2 December.
  • Sport activity limited to the school itself, such as PE classes and sports days, can continue. However, attendance of visitors for sports days should be limited where possible.
  • Swimming lessons and aquatics classes at beaches and lakes can continue as planned.
  • Swimming lessons at public pool or aquatic venues must be postponed or cancelled until at least 2 December.

Camps and excursions

All South Australian camps and excursions can go ahead.

All interstate camps scheduled for the next 2 weeks should be immediately reviewed.

If you do postpone or cancel booked camps and excursions, and need some contract advice, please contact the department’s Contract Support Team on education.COVID19contractsupport [at] sa.gov.au ()
