Extra staffing requirements apply

4 February 2020

The new year brings new staffing requirements in the early childhood sector.

The Education and Care Services National Regulations 2011 now require centre-based services to have a second early childhood teacher, or another ‘suitably qualified person,’ on site. This applies when caring for 60 or more children of preschool age or under.

Regulations 133 and 134 now apply in all states and territories except NSW.  (NSW already has stronger requirements for early childhood teachers. See regulation 272.)

Other minor changes have been made to the National Regulations. This is so they operate as intended, allowing providers with workforce challenges more time to fulfil new requirements.

ACECQA (Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority) has provided a table listing the changes. It has also updated the Guide to the National Quality Framework (NQF).
