Driving continuous improvement for OSHC

17 October 2023

Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) forms an important part of the lives of many South Australian families, in fact there are currently more than 29,000 (or 1 in 6) primary school aged South Australian children enrolled in one of SA’s 389 OSHC services.

The recently released Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care made recommendations relating to OSHC, which the state government has accepted, namely:

  • modernising OSHC qualification requirements
  • increasing central Department for Education support for OSHC
  • finalising the right model of OSHC or ‘wraparound care’ on government preschool sites.

It also made a recommendation to government to ‘ensure a fit for purpose regulatory approach to OSHC'.

As part of our 2023-24 regulatory strategy to provide education and guidance to the sector to support voluntary compliance, the ESB partnered with Queensland Children's Activities Network (QCAN) to provide training in three priority areas, namely:

  • Nominated Supervisor and Responsible Person in Charge
  • Proactive, Interactive and Effective Supervision in OSHC, and
  • Risk Management in OSHC.
