Teachers must meet SA requirements

Teacher registration and child-related employment checks from other states and territories are not automatically recognised in South Australia.

All teachers must be registered as a teacher in SA. The working with children check (WWCC) must be conducted by the SA Department of Human Services (DHS).

Teacher registration

Standard 2.8 in the Standards for registration and review of registration of schools in South Australia requires all schools to employ registered teachers under the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 (SA).

This means teachers must be registered in SA. Teachers who hold current registration in another state or territory must have been granted mutual recognition by the Teachers Registration Board (TRB).

Working with children checks

Standard 3.1 in the Standards for registration and review of registration of schools in South Australia requires all schools to comply with Commonwealth and SA laws. This includes child-protection laws for employment of all staff, volunteers and visitors.

For new applicants and teachers applying for mutual recognition, a requirement of teacher registration in SA is that the WWCC must be conducted by the Department of Human Services (DHS).

Transition arrangements are in place for existing holders of SA teacher registration until it expires. Then the WWCC must be applied. See ‘Frequently asked questions’ about the new WWCC.
